Cellulite

DID YOU KNOW…

90% of all women over the age of 20 have cellulite.

Background Information

Cellulite is a term used to describe a cosmetic imperfection which causes tremendous distress among millions of women. Cellulite consists of fatty deposits beneath the skin of the body that give a lumpy or grainy appearance to the skin’s surface (most prevalent on on the thighs and buttocks). Cellulite is an almost exclusively female issue because female fat-cells are clustered in sacs, arranged in vertical columns. In addition, women have about twice as much fat as men, which makes the fat cells more visible. Contrary to what most people believe, cellulite is not caused by excessive body-fat. The amount of cellulite you have is influenced by several factors: your genes, your gender, the amount of fat on your body, your age, and the thickness of your skin are all associated with the amount of cellulite you have or how visible it is. Even thin women with little body fat can have cellulite due to partially filled fat cells.
